Before the refresh
- Inventory: who gets a new device, which old device it replaces, and when.
- Policy: which folders always move (Documents, Desktop, Pictures), where company files should live afterwards, and what doesn't move.
- Software: the standard image or app list for new devices, and licences that must be released from old ones.
- Accounts: make sure every employee can sign in to their work account, browser sync and MFA on the new device.
- Retention: how long old devices are kept before they're wiped, and who signs that off.
Check the network first
PC-to-PC migration needs the two machines to reach each other on the local network. Guest Wi-Fi and networks with client isolation block that by design, and some VPN clients and endpoint firewalls do too.
- Test one pair of machines on each site and network segment you'll use.
- Prefer wired connections at a migration desk; it is much faster for large profiles.
- Allow the migration app through your endpoint firewall on private networks.
- Keep both machines on mains power and stop them sleeping during the move.
Run a pilot
Pick five people from different teams — including one with a very large set of files and one who isn't technical. Note every question they ask; that list becomes the instructions for everyone else. OthTech Switch's business pricing starts with a 5-device pilot.
Migration day: per-device checklist
- 1
Prepare the new device
Image or set up the new PC, join it to your directory, install the standard apps and sign the employee in once.
- 2
Assign the migration
In the company dashboard, assign a migration (and licence) to the employee so it loads when they sign in to OthTech Switch.
- 3
Pair the two machines
The employee (or a technician) opens OthTech Switch on both PCs, types the one-time code from the new PC into the old one and confirms the matching number.
- 4
Review the plan
Confirm the folders match your policy, check the space warning and the list of items that need manual setup, then start.
- 5
Let it run and verify
The move is direct and encrypted; the employee can keep working on the new PC. Each file is fingerprinted on both sides and only exact matches are marked Verified.
- 6
Close out
Check the report's status in the dashboard, reinstall anything listed as needing setup, and confirm with the employee that their key files open.
Afterwards: records without invading privacy
IT needs to know whether each move succeeded, not what was in it. OthTech Switch for Business shows counts, sizes and statuses per device — never file names or contents — and reports can be exported as CSV or PDF.
- Keep old devices for at least a week after each move before wiping them under your normal process. OthTech Switch never wipes or resets a computer.
- Record completion per device for your asset register.
- Collect the questions from each batch and update your instructions.
Questions people ask
Can IT see employees' files during a migration?
No. With OthTech Switch files travel directly between the two PCs, and the dashboard shows only statuses, counts and sizes — not file names or contents. OthTech never receives them either.
Does OthTech Switch move installed applications?
It lists the applications installed on the old PC so they can be deployed on the new one, and moves supported app data (browser bookmarks, VS Code settings, Git projects, SSH and Docker settings, local databases) on Professional-level plans. Applications themselves should come from your standard deployment.
How is it priced for businesses?
Per device, in Indian rupees, with a 5-device pilot and lower prices at volume. See the pricing page for current figures; enterprise contracts are quoted separately.
